Joululoma

Joululoma on mennyt ohi hujauksessa, mutta niinhän se aina on silloin kun on hauskaa. Pakko myöntää, että on ollut ihan mahtava loma. On tullut koettua vähän erilainen joulu ja vähän erilainen uusivuosi, mutta se olikin vain virkistävää. Toki pakko myöntää, ettei tämä loma tunnu joululomalta, sillä lumesta ei ole merkkiäkään enkä ole mennyt niiden jokavuotisten joululomaperinteiden mukaan.

Jouluaatto sujui rattoisasti yhdessä noin 30 muun ihmisen kanssa. Itseasiassa en viettänyt aattoa minun virallisen host-perheeni kanssa, koska host-äitini joutui tekemään yövuoron töissä, joten vietin sen vähän niinkuin toisen host-perheeni kanssa, nimittäin host-veljieni ja heidän isän suvun kanssa. Syöminen aloitettiin vähän ennen kahdeksaa illalla ja lopetettiin vasta kolmen aikaan aamulla. Jokainen perhe tuo mukanaan jotain joulupöytään, oli se sitten viinit, juustot, alkupalat tai mitä vaan, joten ruokaa kyllä riittää.

Täälläkin heillä on omat perinteet eli kuulemma joka vuosi sama juttu. Syödään, juodaan, jutellaan, nauretaan. Mitä lahjoihin tulee, niin jokainen on St. Nicolas:n päivänä nostanut nimen hatusta (tai esimerkiksi minulle nostettiin nimi, koska en ollut paikalla) ja hänelle pitää sitten ostaa joku ei-turhan-kallis lahja jouluksi. Jouluna sitten jokainen yksi kerrallaan avaa lahjansa kaikkien muiden katsoessa ja ihmetellessä. Perinteisiin kuuluu myös kovaan ääneen lausutut uuuuuuh:t ja aaaaaah:t.

Joulupäivänä sitten mentiin lounaalle samaan paikkaan samojen ihmisten kanssa syömään kaikki jämät, koska ruokaahan oli tietenkin jäänyt reilusti yli. Sitten pitihän sitä päästä viettämään joulua vähän myös omien host-vanhempieni kanssa, joten palasimme kotiin jouluillalliselle. Niin, tosiaan, syödään vain koko ajan.

Tapaninpäivänä olikin sitten tiedossa aikainen herätys, sillä lähdimme nelistään host-veljieni sekä Laísin kanssa Pariisiin! Se oli aivan uskomaton reissu kaikenkaikkiaan. Kierrettiin tietysti Eiffel-Tornit, Louvret, Sacre-Coeurit, Moulin Rouget, Versaillesit, Champs Elyseet, Arc de Triomphit ja kaikki nämä tärkeimmät. Oli ihanaa viettää kolme päivää näin nuorten kesken, puhuen sellaista englannin ja ranskan sekoitusta, vähän irtautuen Belgiasta.

Uuttavuotta vietettiinkin sitten sellaisessa ravintolassa host-vanhempieni, host-veljieni ja Laísin kanssa. Tunnelma oli iloinen, ruoka oli herkullista ja vuosi vaihtui. Vuosi 2013 oli jännittävä ja toi mukanaan paljon uutta. Nyt pitää vain toivoa, että vuosi 2014 on yhä mahtavampi. Yöllä käytiin vielä host-serkkuni luona juhlimassa aamu viiteen asti, vaikka seuraavana päivänä pitikin herätä kohtuu aikasin valmistautumaan lounaalle. Täällä perinteinen uudenvuoden ruoka on sellaista keitettyä kaaliraastetta, joka on yksi harvoista ruokalajeista mitä on tullut eteen eikä ole mennyt alas tältä tytöltä. Onneksi sitä syödään vain kerran vuodessa, vaikka toki kahtena ateriana sinä päivänä.

Christmas break went by in a flash, but it's always like that when you're having fun. I have to admit that it's been an amazing vacation. I experienced a different kind of Christmas and a different kind of New Years, but that was just refreshing. I do have to admit that these holidays have not felt like Christmas break, because there is no sign of snow nor have I followed my usual traditions.

Christmas eve went by merrily together with about 30 other people. In fact, I didn't spend the eve with my official host-family, because my host-mother had to work the night, so I spent it with my kind of second host-family, that is to say, my host-brothers and the family of their father. We started eating around eight o'clock in the evening, and we finished around three in the morning. Every family brings along something for the Christmas table, whether it was the wine, the cheese, the starters or whatever, so there was definitely enough food.

Here they have their own traditions, so every year it's the same thing. You eat, drink, talk, laugh. What comes to the presents, every person had picked up a name at St. Nicolas (or for example someone picked a name for me, because I wasn't there) and then you have to buy a not-too-expensive gift for Christmas. Then on Christmas each person one at a time opens their gift while all the others watch and wonder. The uuuuhs and aaaahs are also part of the tradition.

On Christmas day we then went to the same place for lunch with the same people, to eat all the leftovers, because of course a lot of the food was still left. Then we had to get to spend Christmas with my host-parents as well so we came back home for a Christmas dinner. Yeah, indeed, we eat all the time.

On Boxing day we had to wake up real early, because the four of us, meaning my host-brothers, Laís and myself, left to Paris! All in all, it was an amazing trip. We visited all the most important things including the Eiffel tower, Louvre, Sacre-Coeur, Moulin Rouge, Versailles, Champs Elysees, l'Arc de Triomphe etc. It was great to spend three days among the young, speaking a mixture of english and french, getting away from Belgium for a while.

New Years we spent at a kind of restaurant with my host-parents, my host-brothers and Laís. The atmosphere was cheerful, the food was delicious, and the year changed. The year 2013 was exciting and brought along many new things. Now I just have to wish that 2014 will be even more awesome. At night after the dinner, we still went over to me host-cousin to party until five in the morning, although the next day we had to wake up relatively early to get ready for lunch. Here the traditional new years meal is a type of boiled grated cabbage, which is one of the few dishes that has come along that this girl has not been able to chug down. Luckily it's eaten only like once a year, although we ate it for two meals the same day.
