I've spent three months in Belgium now. Three months has always been that "magical number" that everyone throws around to exchange students. "It takes three months to learn the language" "It takes three months to feel more at home in your host-family" "It takes three months to find friends" or something along those lines. Of course it's not exact, but I guess the point is to say that not everything happens in a blink of an eye. So now, after three months, I can say that I do speak the language (kind of), I do feel more at home with my host-family, and I do have friends. Everything has developed slowly but surely and each exchange student's story is different.
On Thursday morning I had to wake up early, because we took a trip to Brussels with my class for a day. Here, classes are close in the same way as in lower secondary in Finland, meaning you spend pretty much all your classes with the same people, but with the optional subjects, the groups may be a little mixed. Thus this class trip was only for our class. We visited the Palais de Justice to see how the law works as well as the studios of RTBF (kind of like the local YLE) to watch the making of tv and radio programs. All in all a wonderful day and I got to break away from everyday life.
