Jos totta puhutaan, ei Belgia minullekaan tullut heti mieleen kun vaihtoehtoja pohdin, vaan olin aika varma lähteväni Ranskaan tai jopa Sveitsiin, mutta Belgian lisäsin listaan hetken mielijohteesta ja sinnehän matkani johtikin. Siinä vaiheessa en tiennyt mitään Belgiasta, paitsi sen verran olin ottanut selvää, että yhdellä alueella puhutaan ranskaa ja toisella taas "flaamia". Se oli kuitenkin mahtavaa tulla sellaiseen maahan, josta ei ollut oikein mitään stereotypioita, mitään mietteitä, se oli kuin puhdas paperi, jota pääsee täyttämään. Ja täyteen se on tässä vuoden aikana tullutkin ja siitä tulin antamaan pienen kurkistuksen.
Belgiasta pitää tietää sen verran, että historiaa sillä on paljon, joka on vahvasti vaikuttanut siihen mitä se on tänäpäivänä: melkein kuin kaksi maata yhden sisällä. Kun matkustaa toiselle puolelle valtiota, tuntuu ihan kuin olisi astunut toiseen maahan, sillä kulttuuri, kieli, tavat ja ideologia muuttuu kokonaan. Ainoa asia mistä tietää olevansa edelleen Belgiassa on se, että ihmiset istuskelevat nauttimassa olutta ja/tai ranskalaisia majoneesilla.
Ruoka onkin sellainen asia, joka näyttää Belgiaa yhdistävän. Löytyy belgialaisia perunoita (ehkä tunnettu paremmin kuitenkin ranskalaisina...miksiköhän), suklaata, vohveleita, olutta, sekä simpukoita. Tuleville vaihtareille siis varoitus: turha luulla, että Belgiaan voi tulla laihtumaan!
Belgia on pieni maa, usein vähän huomaamaton, ajatellaan sen ehkä olleen vain kynnysmattona maailmansodille, mutta se on sitäkin rikkaampi kulturellisesti ja he ottavatkin helposti vastaan muun kulttuurin omaavia. Kaiken lisäksi, se on keskellä Eurooppaa, joten matkustusmahdollisuudet ovat käden ulottuvilla. Ylittämällä rajan pääsee Ranskaan, Luxembourgiin, Saksaan tai Hollantiin ja nopeastihan sitä hyppää vieläkin pidemmälle. Belgian sisälläkin löytyy kyllä upeita kaupunkeja, eivätkä ne ole kaukana, sillä Belgia päästä päähän on maksimissaan 280km!
Mutta se mikä on ranskalaisen Belgian keskellä on kuitenkin ne ihmiset. Ehkä heillä on usein taipumus sekavoittaa asioita kun tullaan organisoimiseen (ja varsinkin politiikkaan!) ja heihin voi olla vaikea saada syvää yhteyttä, mutta kun kunnolla pääsee niiden ihmisten keskuuteen ja heidän kulttuuriin sisälle, niin ei niistä enää irti päästäisi millään! He osaavat nauraa ja nauttia elämästä täysillä!
Why go to french-speaking Belgium as an exchange student? That's a question that all the belgians want me to answer and maybe it would be good to explain that to the rest of the world too.
To be honest, Belgium wasn't the first country that came to my mind when I was weighing all the options, instead I was pretty sure that I'd go to France or even Switzerland, but I added Belgium to the list impulsively and that's where my path took me in the end. At that moment, I didn't really know anything about Belgium, except that in one area they speak French and in the other, "Flemish". However, I find it amazing to come to a country of which you have no stereotypes, no thoughts, it was like a clean piece of paper that you get to fill up. And full it has become during this year and now I'm here to let you have a peek.
What you have to know about Belgium is that there's a lot of history behind what the country is today: almost like two countries in one. When you travel to the other side of the state, you feel as if you've stepped into a different country, because the culture, the language, the customs, and the ideologies change completely. The only way you know you're still in Belgium is seeing the people sitting around with their beers and/or fries with mayonnaise.
Actually, food is one of the things that really seem to unite Belgium. You can find belgian fries (although more commonly known as french fries...who knows why), chocolate, waffels, beer, and mussels. Warning for future exchange students: you can forget coming to Belgium to lose weight!
Belgium is a small country, often a little unnoticeable as we may find it as just a doormat for the World Wars, but it's all the richer culturally and they welcome warmly those who have another culture. To top it all off, it's right in the middle of Europe so the travelling opportunities are right within reach. By crossing the borders, you can get to France, Luxembourg, Germany or Netherlands and you're quickly even farther. In Belgium itself you can find gorgeous cities and they're not that far away, since the distance from one end of the country to the other is max 280km!
But the most important thing in French-speaking Belgium is the people. Maybe they sometimes have the tendancy to complicate things when it comes to organisation (and especially politics!) and it may be hard to get a deeper connection with them, but when you truly find yourself among these people and their culture you no longer want to let them go at all! They know how to laugh and enjoy life to the fullest!
